The Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) is proud to announce an evening social, to take place after the November 3rd pre-conference. This informal affair will be an excellent time to mingle and network with colleagues from the region, meet your ALAO board members, and, of course, enjoy some delicious hors d’oeuvres . A cash bar will also be available.

The social will take place at the ALAO 2011 Conference headquarters, Hilton Toledo, in the Pine/Willow rooms from 7-9:30pm.

Wizards and Vampires and Nerdfighters, Oh, My!
Popular Fiction in the Academic Library
Nancy Down (Bowling Green State University), Kathy Yoder (Bowling Green State University) Popular literature, such as the Harry Potter series and the Twilight Saga, are increasingly used in academic classes. Our presentation discusses how our Curriculum Resource Center supports the use of such materials as young adult reading and as teaching materials. Our Popular Culture Library archives the materials to document cultural history. We conclude with ideas on collaborations between our collections to promote popular literature in the academic library.

2011 ALAO Conference: Preconference

The Academic Library Association of Ohio is excited to offer a pre-conference this year, with a lineup that promises to be professionally valuable and engaging. The pre-conference kicks off with an opening keynote delivered by Lauren Pressley, entitled, “Change and Opportunities for Today’s Academic Libraries.” Ms. Pressley is an Instructional Design Librarian at Wake Forest University, and the author of So You Want to Be a Librarian? and Wikis for Libraries.


The pre-conference agenda includes a panel of Ohio academic library leaders who will discuss ACRL’s The Value of Academic Libraries: A Comprehensive Research Review and Report. Our distinguished panel includes:

  • Sara Bushong, Dean of Libraries, Bowling Green State University (panelist)
  • Susan Scott, Director of the Library, Ohio State University – Newark Campus (panelist)
